It is no secret that my favorite coffee is single origin, Guatemalan! When I saw Healthy Traditions offer green coffee beans that were Guatemalan, you bet I bought them in bulk! My husband and I are always on the lookout for clean beans to roast.
These green beans come from small farms and the "beans are glyphosate and pesticide tested, with none detected in our sample. The flavor notes of these beans are Mellow, Nutty and Citric." [Sourced directly from their website].
I have shared a lot over the years in my Instagram stories and on my site about home adventures in roasting. Starting with an old school popcorn machine, moving to a whirly-pop style roaster, and graduating to what we use now!
Here are my essentials for truly homemade and home roasted coffee:
A roaster
Brown bags for coffee storage: I like these ones because they have the off gas chamber built in and fold down nicely...but there's so many to choose from.
Size 4 coffee cone filters: sometimes they have these at BJ's in 3-packs which are a great deal
A few other notes:
We roast our own every couple months. When I run out, here's what I use (affiliate code: SATIATEDBLONDE). It's best to do it in a well ventilated area. We do it in our kitchen but this summer will hopefully be moving it outside because the fire alarm gets triggered every time, haha. Another reason to do it outside or in the garage besides the alarm is the smell...roasting coffee doesn't smell as good as roasted coffee, haha. I like it best three days post-roast. Also, depending on the roaster, we've had chaff fly all over the place. Another random note on bean storage: for some reason, the unroasted bag of coffee beans smells like green bell peppers to me. I didn't notice this off-gassing with other smaller green beans I've purchased, but it is definitely noticeable with the bulk bag. I keep it in a storage tote of its own.
