I wanted to share with you three candle brands that pass my "test." It's not just food and clothing labels that I look at closely, but also candle brands that disclose their full ingredient list/share what they make them with (because I've found not all of them do)! I am sensitive to a lot of smells, but I've found that these candles don't give me a headache, and DO give that sense of hygge I've been searching for. They're each unique in their own way!
In true Nicole fashion, I'm working on trying all of their non-toxic candles--and I like every one I've tried so far! Peppermint Twist, Wintergreen, and Fresh Mint + Lime are great. I'm looking forward to burning Lemongrass Eucalyptus on my patio this summer and Pure Vanilla is one of their newest ones I can't wait to try! They use a mix of beeswax and coconut oil in their candles.
Additionally, Fontana candles are the first to be MadeSafe® Certified. This excerpt directly from their website states:
"The MADE SAFE® seal confirms that a household product is free of any and all toxins known or suspected to harm human health, animals, or ecosystems. Certified goods have been thoroughly examined by researchers and scientists to ensure they’re made without known behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, flame retardants, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, or harmful VOCs."
These candles use 100% natural ingredients and they're made with beeswax (from USA apiaries), a small amount of coconut oil, and organic hemp wicks. They're hand poured, free of paraffins, synthetics, dyes, parabens, phthalates and petrochemicals. I've tried several of their scents and cannot pick a favorite! My hubby's favorite is Leather & Smoke.
The candles come with a Bible verse (Romans 5:8) on the bottom which I love! The triple wick and unique design makes them luxurious. Read my 2021 review of Eucalyptus + Lemon.
I was hesitant to try these candles at first because of the soy base, and I don't usually do soy candles. But, as I learned more about the company and their standards, I decided to give it a try. It is third-party lab tested to reduce mold counts and mycotoxin levels. Their wick is lead-free (side note: they have my favorite wick trimmer!!!!) and I've never had a candle burn all the way to the bottom like this one -- it uses up almost all of the wax and I've never experienced any tunneling. It uses botanical ingredients embedded in the wax, but it doesn't have a smell to me at all when it burns, however, it DOES get rid of unwanted smells in my home--listen to what happened! I got a toilet bowl cleaning liquid (that turns out it was greenwashed, unfortunately) and after I cleaned the toilets, it smelled up the entire bathroom and connected bedroom, spreading out into the hallway as well. I had visitors coming who are very sensitive to smells, so I was wondering what I should do. I lit this candle in the bathroom and in less than 30 minutes, the smell from the toilet bowl cleaner was gone. It was still strongly lingering in the other bathrooms I used it in, so I know the candle made a huge difference here!
I've also used these (along with other EC3 products) pre- and post-testing my home, and the mold screening test plates speak for themselves!
Also, they just came out with a beeswax option, so if you've been wanting to try this candle out but the soy is a no for you, you can check them out now!
